Seasearch Observer course Thursday, 22nd April 2021 7:30 PM - 9:30 PM

Seasearch is a project for volunteer divers who have an interest in underwater life, want to learn more, and want to help protect the marine environment around the coasts of the UK. This is a virtual classroom course aimed at giving divers new to the project and marine recording a basic grounding. This year we will be running the course online and breaking it down into five sessions over the course of three days. At the end of the course you should be able to complete the Seasearch Observation form and take part in Seasearch dives either on your own, with your club or on targeted dives organised by Seasearch coordinators.

During the course you'll learn about Seasearch itself (its aims, history and achievements), a basic introduction to the variety of marine life in British and Irish waters, recognising and classifying marine habitats, position fixing, and how to fill in the Observation Form. The course concludes with a 'video dive' and an opportunity to practice filling in a form without even getting wet!

As this course is online, you will need a copy of The Diver’s Guide To The Marine Life of Britain and Ireland (2nd Edition), and this is included in your course fee. We will be referring to this book during the course and it will be your go-to ID guide once you get started as a Seasearch volunteer. If you already own a copy of this book, please select the ‘course only’ option when booking your place.

An actual dive isn’t included in the course itself but qualifying dives are required to complete the qualification. We are working to help trainees achieve this given the changing circumstances – more detail will be given during the course.

If you are already a qualified Seasearcher, or have attended a course previously, you are welcome to join this course as a refresher free of charge. Please email Sarah Ward to register as a refresher or for more information.

Sussex Wildlife Trust needs to be able to share your contact details with the Marine Conservation Society (MCS) in order to register you as a Seasearch volunteer once you have completed the course. They will also require your postal address in order to send you your course materials (if requested). These details will only be shared for the purposes of Seasearch and you will not be contact by MCS for any other reason, unless you have requested to be.
