From Toad Abodes to Mini Meadows: Creating Small Scale Wildlife Habitats in School Grounds

Sussex Wildlife Trust has years of experience creating and maintaining some of the most important wildlife habitat in the county. However to fight the challenges of climate change and large scale development we need to get creative to join up these habitats wherever possible.

The session will give teachers a chance to discuss what wildlife habitats they have and are looking to add to their school grounds.

We will look at practical examples of small, and large, scale wildlife habitats we’ve created in schools in Sussex, and talk about the services we offer to help. These include ponds, meadows, beetle banks, flower beds and hibernacula. Teachers will also have an opportunity to consider how creating these habitats can be used as a stimulus for further work back at school, enhancing different areas of the curriculum.

We will also discuss some of the tools and equipment available to schools to help them survey and monitor wildlife visiting their grounds.
