The elusive Bittern was considered extinct in the UK by the 1870’s. Though they recolonised in the early 1900’s their numbers have fluctuated, making them the subject of a joint EU LIFE project here at Rye Harbour. Come and join us at the Viewpoint in order to look and listen out for this secretive member of the Heron family. Their ‘booming’ call can carry for up to 3km, but we’ll also be hoping to catch a glimpse of them as they fly in to roost in the reedbed. We’ll also keep our eyes peeled for other birds and wildlife present in this peaceful location.

Binoculars are recommended, though we will have a few pairs available on the day.

Meet at Rye Harbour village car park (next to the Martello Tower). The nearest postcode is TN31 7TX and the harbour itself is two miles SE of Rye town.

NOTE: If you’re walking from Rye (the railway station) to Rye Harbour, there is a footpath from Brede Lock (on Harbour Road) along an old railway line that avoids walking the whole length of the road.
