Identification and Natural History of Bumblebees and Other Bees (15/06/2019) Saturday, 15th June 2019 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM

Bees in Britain, an introduction to their identification, ecology and conservation.

Bumblebees are the most frequently recognised bees; however there are, altogether, over 200 different species of bee in Britain and trying to tell the species apart can awkward. The course will introduce the main groups of bees and provide guidance for recognising these groups, as well as a few, very distinctive, individual species.

 Being able to identify the species is only part of the picture, the species behave differently and occupy different niches in the countryside; the day will introduce participants to some of the major ecological differences between the species and the implications of these for actions to conserve our bee fauna.

Such conservation action needs to be carried out at a large scale and must, therefore, recognise how bee conservation can be integrated into an actively farmed landscape without destroying the capacity of farming to provide food for humans.
