Walk - Everyone Welcome (16/06/18) Saturday, 16th June 2018 9:45 AM - 3:30 PM

Meet in good time for a 9.45 departure from Kithurst Hill car park (Explorer Map 121: TQ 070125). The nearest postcode is RH20 4HW. If travelling from Storrington, take the Amberley Road (B2139) heading south west, and, after about one and a half miles, take the left hand turning (which is not well signposted) into a narrow, badly maintained road. The road ends at the car park on the top of the Downs. There are no public toilets nearby. Depending on the weather, there is the possibility of some mud on the morning walk and part of the afternoon walk.

The morning walk is circular, just under four miles along bridleways: there are no stiles. There will be good views down onto Parham Park, and the surrounding countryside. Part of the walk will be along the South Downs Way where we will pass a meadow and should get to see a number of different species of butterflies. We will then make a gentle descent followed by a gentle ascent back up to the car park. There is little shade, so sun cream is recommended (if we get a hot, sunny day).

We will drive about three miles to the Crown Inn, Cootham, (RH20 4JN (Explorer Map 121: TQ 074146) for lunch at around 13:00. The pub is on the A283 about one mile from the very centre of Storrington, heading west. Please note that the pub car park is not large, so some may need to park nearby, or car share. Because of the likely numbers, we have been requested to pre-order food from a restricted menu a week before. Walkers who have not walked with us before, are requested to ring Derek and Sarah for details of the menu no later than a week before the walk.

For the afternoon walk, we have permission to leave the cars in the Crown Inn car park. The two-and-a-half-mile afternoon walk will be through Parham Park (part of which is assigned as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI)). It will be an easy, more or less level, ‘there and back’ walk which can be shortened at any point. There are no stiles. We will get views of the Elizabethan house, and see dark fallow deer, many veteran oak trees and lichens. If we are lucky then we may also hear the native field crickets which have been released by Natural England in the park.
