Walk - Everyone Welcome - Rye Harbour Nature Reserve (10/02/18) Saturday, 10th February 2018 9:45 AM - 3:30 PM

Introduction For the majority of our “regulars”, Rye Harbour will be a very long drive and so some car sharing will be appropriate. Please contact Terry Wills ([email protected]) if you are interested in car sharing.

Meet in good time for a 9.45 departure from the main harbour car park next to the Martello Tower (Explorer Map 125: TQ 943189). The nearest postcode is TN31 7TX. Car parking is free, however a donation would be very gratefully received. There are good public toilets very nearby. There is also a little café called Bosun Bites nearby that would do a reasonable cuppa if needs be.

We will be exploring much of the Nature Reserve by following a network of level, dog friendly pathways with just two stiles. The landscape is very exposed so please come with suitable clothing and footwear for the time of year. The area has been designated as a Local Nature Reserve, a Site of Special Scientific Interest, a Special Protection Area, a Special Area of Conservation, a Natura 2000 site AND a Ramsar wetland centre! Dr Barry Yates, the Rye Harbour Nature Reserve Manager, will be on hand to give us an introductory talk for our visit and accompany us before we set off. There will be much to see so don’t forget your binoculars! The reserve is a haven for a wide variety of birds: over 31 different types had been logged on the day of our first recce in October.

There are a number of options for the afternoon walk which are rather weather dependent. One of these would be to revisit some of the bird hides in the reserve and another would be to move the cars back along the road and explore more of the reserve at Castle Water where there are more hides and viewpoints. The Church of The Holy Spirit is also well worth a visit as it is home to the very moving memorial remembering the seventeen men of the Mary Stanford lifeboat who were lost at sea in 1928 whilst answering the distress call of the Steamer Alice of Riga.
