Directions: Travelling east on the A27 take the second exit after the Southwick tunnel. At the roundabout take the next left signposted Devil’s Dyke. Continue on this road for about half a mile then fork left. Continue for a further mile and a half. At the sharp right hand bend, fork left. This takes you straight to the far car park where the road ends. If approaching from the Poynings direction, head along the Saddlescombe Road and, just past Saddlescombe Farm, fork right. Continue up the hill past the Dyke Golf Club entrance until a sharp left hand bend, turn right and proceed to the far car park.

The pub will not be open in the morning. Food will need to be pre-ordered the day before. Menus will be sent out in good time. (NB if you are planning to come along and are not already on the Walking Group’s mailing list then please email Terry Wills ([email protected]) to ensure that you are sent a menu).

The car park is Pay and Display, £2 per day but free to National Trust members. For non-members you can get a refund from the pub if you spend more than £10 there. There are toilet facilities in the car park.

The Devil’s Dyke is an area of outstanding natural beauty with a long and curious history. There is so much to discover here even in November.

The morning walk is about three miles and there is one stile. We begin on the South Downs Way from where we descend, gradually, into the Dyke, the deepest and widest dry valley in the country. En route, we should see the walls of the Iron Age Hill Fort, the remnants of Britain’s first cable car, stunning downland landscape and birds of prey soaring. We then pass briefly through broadleaved woodland on our way to Saddlescombe Farm where we begin our gradual ascent to rejoin the South Downs Way. On the ascent, there is plenty of opportunity to pause for viewing. The views are breathtaking. Fungi and songbirds may also be observed. If there is time then we will visit the restored 17th century Donkey Wheel at Saddlescombe. We aim to reach the pub around 12.30.

Departing at 14.00, the afternoon walk is just under two miles and the terrain is good and relatively flat. We start with panoramic views ranging from Brighton, to the Isle of Wight, the Hogs Back, Box Hill and Ashdown Forest. We then walk on Fulking Hill returning by the escarpment path with superb views of the fields and villages below. If time permits, we will visit the remnants of the Victorian funicular railway that ran down to Poynings.
