Walk - Everyone Welcome (18/06/16) Saturday, 18th June 2016 9:45 AM - 3:30 PM

Meet in good time for a 9:45 departure from the Royal Oak Inn, Pook Lane, East Lavant, Chichester, Sussex, PO18 0AX. (www.royaloakeastlavant.co.uk: Explorer Map 120 or OL8: SZ 864085).

There is a small car park for about 15 cars across the road from the pub and there is a lay-by about 50 yards to the east of the pub outside Parkers Cottages. The pub will be open for coffee from 9:15 and we will need to order lunch from the menus provided before we leave. Sample menus are available on their website.

The morning walk is just under five miles through open down and farm land and has no stiles.

The walk starts with a gentle climb up an unmade track leading to spectacular views to the south. It is then generally flat and downhill for the rest of the walk. There should be various wildlife sighting opportunities along the open Downs and hedgerows.

We plan to reach the pub around 12:30. The afternoon walk is a very short drive away to a car park in West Stoke (Map ref: SZ 825088). We take a path from the car park for about 15 mins before entering Kingley Vale National Nature Reserve. The walk takes us through the largest and oldest yew tree grove in Europe, past a dew pond before rising up to the top of this section of the Downs. Here the views are spectacular and worth the effort of the climb which is steep in places. Sightings of green woodpeckers, red kites and buzzards are possible and the dew pond offers grass snakes, toads and newts as inhabitants. 39 species of butterflies have been sighted on the chalk grassland.

There is a charming church in West Stoke that is well worth a visit after the walk.
