Wildlife Walks, Talks and Courses in July 2019

June has stayed mainly dry but there were certainly a few monumental downpours especially towards the end of the month. The countryside certainly needed a bit of rain and I’m sure your gardens did too. As we head into July temperatures are starting to rise past 25 degrees – but will we be seeing a repeat of last summer’s record breaking hot summer? While our birds may go a bit quiet in July it is the best month to see butterflies, dragonflies, moths and flower-rich meadows.  

Throughout July we’ll be putting on our shorts and grabbing our binoculars, cameras and sun tan lotion.

We are leading plenty of guided wildlife events to help you get out and experience some of the wildlife of Sussex. Whether you want to see some new species, explore a new part of the county or just get out in the fresh air these events are for you. Come along and join us in July.  

On top of all these events Sussex Wildlife Trust are running their busy programme of wildlife courses throughout the month giving you a chance to learn more about some of the county’s amazing wildlife and habitats. All July’s courses are held at our classrooms and nature reserve at Woods Mill near Henfield.  

 There is a special event on Saturday 13 July to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Seaford Head Nature Reserve. Throughout the day (from 10am to 4pm) we’ll be running a programme of walks and events. There’s butterfly walks, bird walks, bug hunts, moth trap opening, rockpooling and much more. Come along and help us celebrate.

    Messaging to say I found 3 stag beetles within a few weeks; a male and female in my garden (GU31 5DD) and another female a few miles away in the playground of Stedham school (GU29 9Q5.) I think they had fed very happily on my large ornate wooden mushroom in the garden, which is staying put for the purpose!

    Nothing at all further west than Brighton. It’s too far from Bognor Regis and would love to see more things happening in this side of the county.
