Wildlife Walks and Courses in June 2018

The month starts with a new course looking at Invertebrates of Chalk Downland (1 June) at Singleton and the following day there is another new course introducing you to the often overlooked world of ferns in Lodsworth (2 June). Most of our courses have already sold out and those that remain are getting close - so make sure you book your place.

West Dean Woods is being opened especially as part of West Dean's Art & Craft Festival on 2 June so its a good opportunity to learn more about the wildlife and management of this woodland reserve.

For those who would like to bring wildlife closer to home we have a few places left of two courses held in a beautiful location in Adversane near Billingshurst. Learn more about Wildlife Gardening on 5 June and creating Wildflower Meadows (whether for an entire field of a corner of the garden) on 7 June.

The weekend of 8 & 9 June marks 50 years since the opening of our Woods Mill nature reserve. To celebrate we are running lots of walks and other events over that weekend. Look on the website for details and come along to help us celebrate.

We won't just be celebrating over thus weekend. Thanks to funding from ScottishPower Foundation we are celebrating throughout the year. Look for special Woods Mill 50 events on the website.

On 15 June we are running a course looking at the amazing world of spiders. Our reserve at Iping Common is the best site in Sussex for spiders, boasting 204 species – over a third of the UK’s spider species! Learn all about them on this one day course. 16 June is our popular Bumblebees and Other Bees course on the South Downs near Sompting.

Over at Rye Harbour on 17 June there is a walk to look at the great variety of breeding birds nesting there. It's a great chance to watch the chicks as they jostle for food.

Our Shoresearch series of events gives you the chance to learn about the amazing world of wildlife which is exposed as the tide retreats. On 19 June the Shoresearch team will be over at Pett Level in East Sussex. On the same day the Eastbourne group have arranged a walk at Court Lodge Farm near Wartling - well worth a visit.

Midsummer's Day (21 June) sees events at Woods Mill and Iping Common - including an evening walk looking for the enigmatic nightjar.

Alistair Duncan has been running a series of popular Mindfulness in Nature courses and he returns to Woods Mill on 23 June for an exploration of Wyld Ways and connections with nature. The past few weeks have highlighted the demands and pressures that are exerted by developments on the Sussex countryside. Our Wildlife and the Planning Process course on 27 June gives you an insight into the legal conservation frameworks that are in place.

The month ends with our Grasses, Sedges and Rushes course. Always a popular course which we run each year to give people the skills to identify these groups of plants. Have a good month!
