Wildlife Courses and Walks in March 2016

It’s been a long, wet, dull winter but in March there are plenty of opportunities to banish your blues and get outdoors.

With the dawn chorus in full swing in the treetops make time in March to stand in your garden or street and listen to the free concert provided by your local robins, blackbirds, dunnocks, wrens and song thrushes. As the temperature gets warmer hibernating butterflies will start to emerge; look out for red admirals, peacocks, small tortoiseshells, commas and brimstones.

March Wildlife Walks

There’s plenty of opportunities to join Sussex Wildlife Trust for a wildlife walk during March. We’ll be leading a walk around our Rye Harbour reserve (March 6th) and exploring the Combe Valley (between Bexhill and Hastings) on March 10th. Thirsty hikers will be pleased to know the walk at West Dean (near Chichester) on March 12th starts and finishes at The Dean Ale and Cider House. On the afternoon of March 14th the Sussex Wildlife Trust’s Chichester group will be walking around the Sussex coast at East Head.

The display of wild daffodils on our West Dean reserve is one of the highlights of the year and reserve manager will be leading a members-only walk here on March 17th (booking essential).

In East Sussex the Sussex Wildlife Trust’s Eastbourne group will be looking for signs of spring along the Cuckoo Trail from Horam on March 22nd.

Courses

If you fancy learning a new skill in 2016 then we’re running a Willow Basket Making course on March 5th where you’ll learn to create weaved baskets with natural materials. But be quick – there’s only a couple of places left on this course!

    Foredown Tower would be pleased to welcome SWT walkers as a starting point or stop-over on one of your walks. Nestled between Portslade Old Village and the South Downs, we offer a café serving hot and cold drinks, cakes and snacks. There’s plenty of free parking. Foredown Tower also houses the South-East’s largest working camera obscura. It is demonstrated by our experts on Tuesdays, Thursdays and the last Saturday of the month.
    The café is open Mon-Fri 10am-3pm.
    At the moment and until 31 March, a photo exhibition entitled “Faces of the South Downs” is open on the first floor. Environmental portraits of people working and living within the South Downs National Park.
