Wildlife Courses and Walks in July 2017

Hopefully you all survived the heatwave! I don’t know about you but I’m just pleased the temperature has dropped down by about ten degrees. But I’m not putting my legs away just yet! July is on the way and I’m sure there’s going to be plenty more opportunities to get out and enjoy Sussex and its wildlife under a hot sun.

It’s a busy month for Sussex wildlife and therefore it’s a busy month for Sussex Wildlife Trust. We’re leading a packed programme of popular events. Almost all of our courses and walks which require booking are already fully booked but there are others which do not require booking or have some spaces left.

On 6 July we will be walking around the mixed habitats of Burton Mill Pond looking for the many species associated with wet woodlands, heath and acid bogs.

On 8 July there are a few places on our Identification and Natural History of Bumblebees course at Sompting. The course is led by bee expert Mike Edwards and will give you an insight into these fascinating insects which, worryingly, are experiencing major declines.

Over in the far east of Sussex you can join a warden for a walk around the wonderful Rye Harbour reserve on 9 July. On 14 July our Seaford Head warden will also be leading a walk around this iconic landscape and looking for some of the special wildlife that lives here.

Back at Rye on 16 July we will be focussing our attention on the special flowers of the reserve. The Eastbourne group are leading a walk on 19 July around the amazing grassland adjacent to Butchershole Bottom. Be prepared for lots of flowers and butterflies.

For those who want to get to grips with wildlife photography David Plummer will be leading his popular two-day ‘Beginning Nature Photography’ course on 22 and 23 July. In the late afternoon of 24 July we’ll be searching the rockpools below the Seven Sisters as part of our Shoresearch programme.

Over at Rye Harbour nature reserve, we’ll be opening the previous evening’s moth trap on the morning of 26 July. At this time of year some of our most impressive moths such as the tigers and hawkmoths could well be lurking in the trap.

Our original July Woods Mill Wander is fully booked and the second one – on 28 July – is almost full. Join us at our reserve and look for summer butterflies and other wildlife.

Finally, as the bird breeding season draws to a close and migrants start to pass south, we will be looking out for a variety of coastal birds on our walk with a warden at Rye on 30 July.
