Why I’ll be leaving a legacy gift to Sussex Wildlife Trust

There are a number of reasons why I’ll be leaving a legacy for Sussex Wildlife Trust, but at the heart of it is the basic desire to help protect and hopefully increase the natural areas of the county for the benefit of current and future generations and, of course, of the wildlife itself.

I grew up in what was then simply Sussex. A child always more into the sciences than the arts, I went off to study zoology. Animals have clearly always appealed to me. Although my career took me away from nature, the appreciation of it, the great pleasure obtained from it, was always there. My office life was counter-balanced by time outdoors, time exploring some of the natural wonders of the world, from far flung forests and mountain ranges to reserves right on my doorstep.

A somewhat nomadic life brought me back to what by then was East Sussex for a few years. While I’m currently living just over the border in Hampshire, where I enjoy Hedgehogs, Foxes and a variety of birds visiting my city garden, my sense of home remains Sussex.

I’ve always believed that it’s entire habitats or ecosystems that need protecting, not a single species. Sussex Wildlife Trust recognises that and its activities these days very much take this approach. As such, I’m very happy to be able to support The Trust in the varied ways that it looks to protect the natural world – a world that needs all the help it can get. Help nature, and it will help us, in so many ways. For now, I’ll continue enjoying countryside and coast, where nothing is better than visiting a nature reserve.
