Update from Tim Castle, Heritage Trainee at Rye Harbour Nature Reserve

It’s been two months since I started at Rye Harbour Nature Reserve and it’s been a busy time. I have been given the opportunity to share what I get up to at the harbour via this blog. I feel honoured to have this chance to gain skills and experience with the different teams at the reserve. All of this is made possible by the National Lottery Heritage Fund. 

In the build up to Christmas I used the BCS cutter, opening up pathways and managing the growth of bramble around Harbour Farm and Long Pit water to help provide habitat for wildlife, such as the Harvest Mouse, which has since been surveyed by the Mammal Society and found to have been present in good numbers.

I worked with our amazing hard working volunteers at Castle Water - cutting, processing and removing the Willow that grows in abundance there. This helps promote the growth of the reed beds and allows wildlife to flourish.

I spent days with our Communities and Wildlife team assisting with different school visits, spending the day on the beach with the school children has been amazing with their energy and interest in the local wildlife. I have also supported with regular visits from St Michaels Hospice wellbeing group, where we have been busy looking at the local bird life, local history and doing some fantastic art.
