Another great turn out of the newly formed Brighton Hit Squad volunteers met me on Saturday for their second conservation session at Sussex Wildlife Trust’s Deneway reserve, in Westdene, Brighton. The group are currently helping to open up the pathway through the nature reserve so it can be better used by Forest School groups and allow for easier management, surveying and community use. Graeme Lyons joined us on Saturday and it was great for the group to share in some of his fascinating discoveries and enjoy seeing the biodiversity thriving on the reserve. Plans are afoot for a spring time survey of the entire site with the group and the setting up of infra-red cameras to spy on the nocturnal creatures that call the Deneway home.

Local demand led to setting up the Brighton Hit Squad who meet monthly on a Saturday morning for practical conservation work. The focus of the group is on Sussex Wildlife Trust’s reserves within the city but we will be working on many other green spaces across Brighton and Hove over the coming months.
