Families sang Christmas carols around an ancient Oak tree at Woods Mill nature reserve last weekend -  just part of a two hour Tree Dressing event organised for children aged between 5 – 11 years old by Learning and Engagement Officer Katie Parker and her volunteer Anne. There were wooden circles to decorate to make hanging decorations for indoor or outdoor trees, old jam jars to transform into fantastic festive lights by using coloured paper and tealights and a wealth of natural flora, plus ribbons and wools to weave into Yuletide wreaths for the front door or to hang in the branches of garden trees.

But what made this event really special for me was watching both Katie and Anne enthuse children and parents alike with the wonder of the natural world.  Full of creative ideas and endless patience, a relaxed atmosphere and lots of fun and laughter. 

I really should attend more of these events. They never cease to reinforce the ethos of Sussex Wildlife Trust and how learning should be fun and exciting with a real sense of achievement whatever your skill.
