Tor Lawrence is appointed Chief Executive of Sussex Wildlife Trust

Sussex Wildlife Trust, the largest nature conservation organisation in Sussex, has appointed Tor Lawrence as Chief Executive following the retirement of Dr Tony Whitbread.

Tor, who grew up in Lewes and now lives in Heathfield said, ‘It is an absolute honour to take over this important role from Tony who has championed Sussex and its wildlife over the past twelve years. My priority will be to work with the staff, trustees, members, volunteers and our other supporters and friends to deliver the lasting Vision he has created for Sussex.’

In her previous role as South Downs National Park Authority Countryside Policy Manager for the eastern Downs, Tor led on a range of issues including the Park’s landscape, education, volunteering, and health and wellbeing programmes, the Heritage Coast partnership and the Cuckmere Estuary Group. She has also held senior management roles with London Wildlife Trust and East Sussex County Council.

Carole Nicholson, Chairman of the Sussex Wildlife Trust, said, ‘I am delighted to welcome Tor as Chief Executive and very much look forward to working with her.

‘Tony Whitbread has had an amazing impact on environmental issues across Sussex and beyond and fully supports the decision of the Council of Trustees to appoint Tor Lawrence.

‘He has been instrumental in developing the loyalty and respect we enjoy from our members and other stakeholders and has shaped our new Vision and Strategy.

‘I am certain Tor’s wealth of experience of partnership working and project management will be essential attributes for driving forward our ambitions embedded in our Vision and Strategy.’

    Welcome the opportunity for SWT volunteers to meet Tor in her new role. Also welcome an evening at Woods Mill for SWT team leaders and their volunteers to present progress with key activities. For example, Shoresearch has a good story to tell. Don’t leave it too long!
