The Repeal Bill

Vital laws that protect our wildlife and the health of our rivers and seas are at risk by our departure from the EU.

On 7 and 12 September, MPs will debate the “Repeal Bill” (the EU (Withdrawal) Bill), which is designed to end our membership of the EU.

The Bill aims to ensure that EU laws are carried into UK law; but the devil is in the detail. As it stands changes could be made to these laws without proper parliamentary debate. We are also particularly concerned by the 'governance gap' that will appear if the environmental functions currently carried out by EU institutions aren't passed onto well-funded UK public bodies after withdrawal.

Great progress has been made in developing and improving environmental laws over the past 40 years. However, these laws are only effective when they have strong institutions and mechanisms to support and implement them in practice.

There are real risks to wildlife from the Repeal Bill (find out more here). We hope everyone who loves wildlife will let their MP know they want the Repeal Bill to keep the vital wildlife protections we have now for our wildlife and wild places. Please ask your MP to stand up for wildlife during the Repeal Bill debates in September.
