This September, Sussex Wildlife Trust is proud to be partnering with the United Nations Association to put on a day-long event all about our wonderful marine environment.

In 2017, the United Nations held an Ocean Conference in New York; an opportunity for the world to come together to take the broad measures necessary to reverse the global decline in ocean health. The idea of this conference was to mobilise collective action by stakeholders, including not only the UN system, but also Governments, scientific and academic communities, non-governmental organisations, the private sector, and local communities.

In response to this call to action, Gonzalo Alvarez, a marine biologist representing the United Nations Association of Bexhill and Hastings, wanted to create an event which brought together many of these sectors at a more regional and local level in order to share ideas and knowledge, forge partnerships and spread the love for our oceans and seas. Thus, the Ocean Symposium was born.

We were delighted to be asked to sit on the steering group for the Symposium, alongside Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust and Rother Voluntary Action. It didn’t take long before we had devised a schedule of speakers and panellists, all of whom were keen to participate and share their expertise.

The Ocean Symposium is happening on Saturday 22nd September in Hastings and we would love to see many of you there. The event is open to all and has been put together with a view that it should be relevent people of all levels of expertise, from professionals to those simply taking an interest.
