The Friends of Langmeads

The Friends of Langmeads is a voluntary group, set up in 2010, with the support of the owner of the land, Arun District Council, to help look after Langmeads Field. 

This is 4.5 hectares (11 acres) of public open space in the coastal parish of East Preston. This popular green space is a rare survivor of open grassy pasture land and is made up of three ancient fields with natural boundaries. It has a variety of trees, bushes and hedges, old drainage ditches and a copse.

The Friends carry out a range of maintenance and planting activities as well as bat watches, providing information boards and leaflets and taking part in community events. We encourage the community and, where practical, the local schools, to get involved.

The Friends welcome the opportunity to be part of Sussex Wildlife Trust’s major new project, “Our Wild Sussex 2024-2030”,to explore, protect and enhance wildlife in the county. Through taking part we aim to discover new aspects of this natural area, expanding our knowledge of its flora and fauna, and learning more about the insects, fungi and mosses here. We hope to start with basic walk about surveys, with expert help where necessary, to make a record of what’s there and to consider how we can improve this natural diversity in the future.

We wish to bring a greater awareness and appreciation of, and connection to, the natural habitat on our doorstep and the importance of looking after it.

This will be a long term community project studying Langmeads throughout the year. Members will be updated through our newsletters and the wider public kept informed through articles in the free magazines delivered to households in East Preston village.
