Stunning poppy picture wins online photo competition

As we commemorate 100 years since the end of World War One, a stunning picture of poppies has won the Sussex Wildlife Trust online photo competition. 

Jamie Fielding’s image of a poppy field, called South Downs Sunrise, was a runaway winner when the public voted for their favourite picture in Sussex Wildlife Trust’s annual online photographic competition. 

Jamie, who lives in Angmering, took up photography as something positive to focus on after his father’s death a few years ago. Love of the Sussex landscape was something they shared. He describes how he came to take the winning picture:

“I’d planned the shot carefully. It was around 4.30am in early summer and I went up on the Downs overlooking the Arun Valley with my Nikon D750 camera. The poppy field could be seen for miles around. The sun comes up quickly in the summer, so I had a tight, ten minute window to ensure I got the picture.”

Jamie tells us more about himself and how he came to take the photo in an interview, here. 

The runner-up this year is Matthew Downes. His photograph of an urban fox taken in Brighton was rather more spontaneous, he explains:

“I took this photo out of my bedroom window with a 200mm zoom lens. I'd just got up to put the kettle on, looked out the window and saw the fox bedding down for the day.”

Congratulation to our winners and thank you to everyone who entered and voted. The final twelve photographs will be displayed at the Sussex Wildlife Trust’s AGM Saturday 10 November, and at the Booth Museum in Dyke Road, Brighton during the summer. They will feature in the Trust’s 2019 online calendar, which will be available monthly to download from the end of December 2018.
