Spring Walk in Friston Forest

Thursday 4 May 2023 - Friston Forest walk

A large group of Sussex Wildlife Trust local members assembled in the Litlington Road car park on a dry but cool morning. As we entered Friston Forest a number of warblers were in good song - Chiffchaffs, Blackcaps and a Willow Warbler. 

Bluebells, Celandines and Cowslips were in flower but sadly no orchids although a couple of sharp eyed botanists managed to point out the leaves of the spotted orchid. Lords and Ladies were abundant in the hedgerows with their dark brown spadix generating heat and attracting many pollinators. 

As we approached the White Horse view point the sun broke through and the immediate rise in temperature resulted in a number of butterflies becoming active - Speckled Wood, Red Admiral, Peacock and a number of Brimstones. Excellent views of a Buzzard and the tuneful repertoire of a Garden Warbler rounded off an excellent walk.
