Selwyns Wood - Eastbourne Group Walk

Two of our Local Group supporters who are now in their second year of a survey of the birds at Selwyns Wood offered to lead a walk for us on 19th April 2016 and 14 of us met in the car park to explore this hidden woodland gem which none of us had previously visited.

Before the walk started, Trevor Hince, the Volunteer Reserve Manager explained to us the history, nature and diversity of the Reserve and then as the walk was mainly on single track paths we split into two groups of 7, one led by Janet Nott and Trevor and the other by Dennis Harding.

From the car park those of us there first saw two Nuthatches mating on a tree branch and throughout the walk the birds were in good voice. We were surrounded by birdsong from even more Nuthatches, Robins, Blue Tits, Great Tits, Blackbirds and Wrens. Some of the other birds we recorded included Blackcap, Long-tailed Tit, Great-spotted and Green Woodpeckers, Jay, Buzzard and those in the group with Dennis also heard their first Cuckoo of the year.

As the morning warmed up a little we also found our first butterflies – Peacock, Orange Tip and Brimstones, one of which is shown in the above photograph nectaring on a Bluebell (my thanks to Patrick Smith for sharing his photo with us).

In parts of the wood there was a lovely carpet of blue provided by the Bluebells and there were also Wood Anemones, Primroses, Dog Violets just coming into flower, Gorse in flower, various ferns and some amazing mosses and lichens which some of us looked at closely using a hand lens.

During the walk, Trevor, Janet and Dennis each highlighted many features of interest about the wood which added considerably to our knowledge and I would like to thank them very much for leading this walk for the Group. Also all us send our thanks to Sarah (Trevor’s wife) who sent him well provisioned with a box of homemade flapjacks which we all thoroughly enjoyed at the end of the walk.
