Rye Harbour November Dawn

On 6th November the morning forecast looked good for a dawn with cloud and sun and with the sunrise at a reasonable 6.59am. It turned out to be the best sunrise I have ever seen!

Just before 6am I packed cameras and tripods and set off on my bike to find a good vantage point on the nature reserve - on top of the flood bank with saline lagoons in the foreground to reflect any colour in the morning sky. Arriving at 6.05am it was looking promising, so I hurriedly unpacked my little compact camera and set it on a mini tripod on a fence post to take a photo every 12 seconds, so that it could run for an hour and later the 268 images that would later be turned into this 17 second timelapse video.


This was the best sunrise I have ever seen and the timelapse revealed the motion of the clouds and the rippling light as the hidden sun shone through clouds on the horizon. 

But the sunrise was much wider than this view, so here is a panning version that includes the sound of the wintering Wigeon.


After the sunrise, the soundscape changed to Curlew preparing to leave their night time roost in the adjacent field.


Cycling back for breakfast I was so pleased that I made the effort to get out early and after breakfast it was great to see how well the timelapse turned out. 

The forecast for the following day was similar, so 6am found back me on the shore waiting for sunrise. It was an altogether more subtle experience...

... but gave the opportunity of watching the sun itself this time. The first 10 minutes of its appearance is squeezed into just a minute


It's no wonder that in our early history the sun and the moon were an important part of the culture. I wonder what the next two days will bring, after all they are named Sunday and Monday.
