It’s been around three years since we installed our fixed-point photo posts on various reserves across Sussex as part of the 60th anniversary celebrations. Since then, we’ve had hundreds of submissions from visitors sending us their photos via social media or email – all contributing to some great citizen science!

I’ve had the job of archiving these photos, and once a year, compiling them into timelapses to give a unique perspective of our reserves through the seasons. You’d think this may be an easy task being a fixed post and cradle, but with the hundreds of different device lens sizes, orientations, and quality of photos sent to us, aligning them into a coherent video is quite the undertaking.

I’m sure you’ll agree it’s worth the effort – and even where some posts are more popular than others, you get a good look at the landscape changing over time. Long-term, these photos will help inform management practices by allowing the reserves team to monitor things such as scrub coverage, soil erosion, flooding or woodland cover.

It's clear this project is well-loved by visitors, many of whom don’t just tag us in the post image, but in wildlife shots, or photos of themselves or their dogs enjoying a day out on one of our fantastic reserves. I’d especially like to thank those contributors who post or email regular photos – it really helps paint those long-term pictures of change across our environments.

So remember – if you see a PhotoPost out in the wild, snap a pic and send it in – it all helps!

    My favourite place – Seaford Head with views of the Seven Sisters. Have walked it so often in my 80+ years, alas no longer just a tad too long and steep. For many years it was a New Year’s Day special with a pub lunch at The Golden Galleon! God bless photography and photographers.
