All across Sussex young people are stepping up for nature.

The David Streeter Wildlife Champions Award celebrates those aged 16–25 who are taking meaningful local action for wildlife and the environment.

Do you know a young person who is already shaping a wilder Sussex? Or are you taking action yourself? We want to hear your story.

Who is David Streeter?

David Streeter MBE co-founded Sussex Wildlife Trust in 1961 and served as President from 2004 to 2017. As an ecologist at the University of Sussex, he spent much of his career inspiring young people to explore and care for the natural world.

This award honours David’s legacy as a call to action — encouraging the next generation to step forward as champions for wildlife today, and into the future.

What’s the Prize?

The winner will receive:

  • £250 in cash or the equivalent value in a weekend Field Studies Council course
  • PLUS a free place on a Sussex Wildlife Trust course worth £50.

Who Can Be Nominated?

We’re seeking nominations for young people who have taken meaningful action for nature. This might include:

  • Volunteering with a local wildlife charity
  • Contributing to a community project that improves the natural word, such as a wildlife garden or Youth Rangers group
  • Raising awareness of environmental issues - through social media or local campaigns
  • Taking part in citizen science, such as recording species through apps like iRecord
  • Studying natural history through college/university, or independently
  • Actively taking part in nature-based events with a local wildlife charity

We also welcome self-nominations — if this sounds like you, we encourage you to put yourself forward.

  • Nominations are open now 
  • Please make sure you have the consent of the nominee before putting them forward (and parental consent if they are under 18)
  • Complete the online application form
  • Submit a 300-word statement explaining why the nominee should be considered for this award
  • Read terms and conditions

This award is about recognising the young people driving change for nature right now - and encouraging their journey as lifelong champions for wildlife.
