New Year Revolutions

As we the start the New Year and a new decade, many of us have already set our intentions for the year to come. Here at the Sussex Wildlife Trust, our intention is to continue to be one of the most effective advocates for wildlife in Sussex - and because it is the single greatest challenge of our time for people and wildlife, we intend to do our best to tackle climate change.  

We have reached a climate turning point, underscored by ongoing and unprecedented local and global weather events. In the landmark Paris Climate Agreement, the world’s nations committed to holding the increase in global average temperature to below 2 °C above pre-industrial levels, to avoid incalculable risks to humanity. Realistically this will only happen if global emissions peak this year, and I think we all recognise that this is unlikely to happen.  

The conversation is no longer about preventing climate change, but adapting to it. Over the coming decade, we need Herculean efforts to curb carbon emissions. And the sooner we take action, the better chance we have of limiting the environmental and wildlife changes that we can currently only guess at.  

It’s going to be a busy year!  

The good news is that global momentum around climate change is peaking, and most people are now either aware or concerned about climate change. Whether it is to consume more conscientiously, speak out for climate change, or campaign for political support, every one of us can help to make the changes needed.  

So as 2020 begins, Sussex Wildlife Trust are setting our intentions firmly on supporting communities to deliver climate resilience across Sussex. We start the year with Sussex Wildlife Trusts Landscape Innovation Conference, bringing people from across our communities together to co-create climate actions and new climate collaborations. The year will end with the 26th session of the UN Climate Change Conference (COP 26) in November in Glasgow. Let’s hope that 2020 really is the year for Climate Action.
