New Discovery Centre Development for Rye Harbour nature reserve

Sussex Wildlife Trust and the Friends of Rye Harbour Nature Reserve are pleased to bring forward proposals for developing a new visitor facility at the nature reserve. The development would be a new high quality centre to provide information, education and refreshment facilities on the nature reserve.

We want to hear your views on our proposals, so during July we are holding a series of drop-in consultation sessions at the listed locations where you can view our plans and talk to us about your thoughts and ideas. We’ll also be displaying the visuals at our temporary information centre at the reserve after the events.

    Artist’s impression looks fabulous, but a flat roof??? Surely we are simply building up expensive repair and maintenance costs for the future? What sort of guarantees will we be getting on leak-proof roofing materials? And will the company providing it last that long What fall-back guarantee is there if the company does go bust and we have to make a claim? Whether the roof is flat or not, would it be possible to make it a green ‘living’ roof? Might even get birds nesting on it!

    I’m fully behind the improvement of the facilities on the reserve, but I think the design is appallingly ugly and out of keeping with the surroundings. I can see that an attempt has been made to use wood, but the overall impression from the drawings is bland, cliched stretches of glass. Overall it resembles a temporary office block. Could they not have used weatherboarding or re-cycled local tiles and made it look more like a cluster of farm buildings? Very disappointing after so much good has been done on the reserve and the building it replaces was so characterful.

    Having cycled from home in Tenterden to Rye Harbour/Pett Level on many occasions as a teenager in the late 1950s/early 1960s to watch birds at “Nook Beach” and associated gravel pits and Pett Level, it has been very encouraging to watch developments on the reserve over the years. This latest venture is the icing on the cake.

    My partner and I moved to a village near Rye Harbour about five years ago. Walking around the nature reserve has always been on our agenda. We think a new Discovery Centre will improve the area immensely. Are there any proposals to preserve the old lifeboat building?

    Tend to agree with the comment that the proposed building looks too contemporary particularly if it’s sited in a prominent place overlooking the reserve. The general idea is good.

    What a ghastly construction – appropriate for perhaps a modern art gallery (Burrell Museum in Glasgow or Sainsbury Centre in Norwich’s UEA) but not for an exposed information centre on a flat beach, visible for miles around. I was involved in the early days of establishing the reserve in the 1960s, as then Secretary of the Sussex OS, and have followed with great admiration the work of Barry Yates et. al. in developing a first-class reserve. This temporary-looking design is reminiscent of the new brutally ugly concrete and glass Parrinder Hide at RSPB Titchwell (Norfolk). This proposed edifice has the appearance of a huge mobile home which has been taken from the nearby caravan park and dropped on to the reserve. Back to the drawing board please, friends – you can do better than this.
