The sun is shining and I’m looking forward to welcoming a new crop of Nature Tots for outdoor family fun and games in the woods this spring.

We fill our two-hour sessions with all sorts of different seasonal activities; from bug hunting to den building, exploring the woodland for signs of spring, building a campfire or den, to creating works of art from natural materials - It’s amazing how much muddy mayhem we can achieve in two hours!

I’m always impressed by the can-do attitude of a new starter handling a bowsaw for the first time, or being one of the first to cross the stream over our wobbly Tot-made plank bridge.Some children take a little longer to gain confidence to join in and learn the woodcraft skills, but that’s what the sessions are all about – building their self-esteem, physical co-ordination and social skills through child-led achievable challenges.

We encourage the children aged 3-5 to try as much of the activity as they can for themselves, and the accompanying adult’s role is to keep a watchful eye, but sit on their hands and let them have a go! It is such a pleasure to watch the Tots learn by doing hands-on tasks and grow as the weeks go by – and parents are often amazed at how resourceful and capable their children can become.

We’ve been running for four years now and seem to keep filling up the groups, so to meet demand we are opening another two new weekday and Saturday groups at our beautiful town and countryside settings across Sussex: Chesworth Farm, Horsham; Tilgate Park, Crawley; Stanmer Park, Brighton; Woods Mill, Henfield; Seven Sisters Country Park, Eastbourne; and on the coast at Rye Bay.
