Sussex Wildlife Trust Nature Tots sessions are resuming at all locations. 

Rye Harbour Nature Reserve Learning and Engagement Officer Lucy Bowyer talks to us about the Nature Tots sessions that she runs on the beach

Where and where do your sessions take place?

Rye Harbour Nature Reserve or Pett Level, on Wednesdays, 10am-noon. The sessions run from March till October.

What activities might the group do?

We might go rockpooling, make a kite, create a pebble tower (which can teach them about tides). We play games, tell stories, have hot chocolate around a campfire... all sorts of different things. Sometimes activities which relate to the season. 

Why is learning about nature and wildlife important?

We want children to engage with nature and the world around them, so that they will care about it for life. 

Who can come?

Anyone with pre-school children.

What if the weather isn't good?

We take a shelter, but we go ahead anyway.

Are you aiming to do more than just have fun?

Yes, they also learn about marine life, learn to problem solve, as well as safely take risks.

Do parents or guardians attend?

Yes.

What should the children wear?

Layers. It can be windy. Wellies, waterproofs, clothing suitable for paddling.

Do they need to bring anything?

Not really. We have a big box of buckets and spades!

What about loos?

There is one nearby at Pett Level, and one in the carpark at Rye Harbour. 

How much does it cost?

The cost varies according to whether you're a member of Sussex Wildlife Trust or not. See here for more information. 

What do you most enjoy about running the sessions?

Seeing little people discover the fun of finding a crab in a rockpool. Children can learn so much through play.

Can you come and try one? 

Yes.

Who else helps run the groups?

I have a great group of volunteers.
