Meet the staff - Kerry Williams

Kerry Williams has joined the Comms team as 'Communications Officer - Conservation', with responsibility for our part-time WildCall service  usually available Monday to Friday, 9.30am-1pm. 

Tell us a bit about yourself

I work on the WildCall service, taking enquiries about wildlife in Sussex. I also write blogs and other content for the website and social media. I'm from a creative background in writing and acting (sometimes even for money), am a bit of a nerd about social science, and I'm a keen birder.

What do you enjoy about your job?

Speaking to the public about wildlife, researching wildlife, writing about wildlife - there's a theme. I'm fascinated by the human side of conservation; personal connections to wildlife, how people engage with nature, and what can be achieved for the environment through people power.

What are the biggest challenges?

With wonderful often comes weird, and wildlife can certainly throw curveballs. Some of the WildCall queries that come in can be real head scratchers, and despite our best efforts sometimes we just don't know the answer!

What qualities do you need to do it?

It's a really varied job, requiring creativity, research, and customer service skills. The research skills required to answer some of the trickier WildCall queries feed into the writing part of my job, often providing the factual foundation to support creative ideas.

Where is your happy place, in Sussex?

I am a big fan of urban wildlife, so love watching Starlings murmurating from Brighton Pier. Where else can you watch one of nature's greatest spectacles whilst eating a doughnut?

How do you relax?

Birding, dancing, and losing pub quizzes.

Tell us something about you that most people won’t know 

I worked for a few years as a TV and film extra. You probably recognise me from my portrayal of 'blurry background shape' in various unsuccessful ITV dramas.
