Tell us about the Eastbourne Local Group – who are you and what do you get up to?

We are a friendly group run by volunteers with the aim of supporting the work carried out by the Sussex Wildlife Trust. All our members have a keen interest in the natural world. We run a full programme of events throughout the year. There are monthly evening meetings in Eastbourne where a visiting speaker will deliver an illustrated talk on some aspect of natural history and we also hold monthly local guided walks of two to three hours duration.

Do you need wildlife knowledge/any levels of fitness to join?

No prior knowledge of the rich biodiversity of Sussex is expected. Many of our members carry out wildlife surveys at sites close to Eastbourne and they are delighted to share their knowledge with complete beginners. Most of our walks are gentle ambles with frequent stops to look at the wildlife or the wonderful views.

What do you (personally) get out of it?

I am a retired biology teacher and one of the most rewarding aspects of teaching biology was the opportunity to introduce young people to the rich biodiversity they can find close to home. By leading walks and helping to organise the evening talks I can continue to raise awareness of the fantastic wildlife on our doorstep in East Sussex and help people connect with nature.

Is anyone welcome to join?
