Lonely Tree wins photo competition

Sunset across the iconic landscape at Cissbury Ring scooped Jamie Fielding first prize in Sussex Wildlife Trust's 2016 Photograph Competition. Jamie's Cissbury Sunset won the public vote and a £100 prize.

Jamie described how he took his winning photograph.

"This tree up at Cissbury Ring is something of a local landmark and is certainly well photographed by many people who go up there. The "lonely tree" type image is something of an iconic shot and it's one I knew I wanted, but it needed to be different from the hundreds of other shots taken of it. In April, we were having some great sunsets, really soft light, and given the position of the tree looking west, the sun always sets behind it. I was lucky to have idea conditions on the evening I set out, a long drawn out Sunset gave a beautifully glow across the sky. Using a wide aperture helped soften the sun and the scene too which I felt gave it a slightly dreamy/surreal feel to it. It's a great spot that shows Sussex at its best."

Runner-up was Emma Varley, with her quintessentially English scene of a bluebell wood. Emma, who enjoyed previous success in our competition as the winner in 2015, will receive a Mark Greco designed tea towel and mug from the Sussex Wildlife Trust's online shop.

Emma told us how captured this springtime spectacle.


"The photo was taken at Eartham Woods in April. I was determined to catch a sunrise there, but had arrived too late the week before as I'd got lost on the way. Getting up very early for the second weekend in a row didn't seem like a great idea, but I was so glad I did. The display of bluebells was breathtaking and as the sun rose the woods were completely still and calm adding to the spectacle. I managed to capture the long, radial shadows of the trees as I'd hoped, and was pleased to manage my first sunburst as well."

Congratulations to our winners and a big thank-you to everybody who entered and voted in this year's competition. The final twelve photographs will be displayed at the Trust's Annual Members Meeting on 12 November. The twelve finalists will also feature in the Trust's 2017 online calendar, this will be available on our website monthly from the end of December.
