Kingfisher Confrontation wins Sussex Wildlife Trust's photo competition

Sussex Wildlife Trust judges, headed up by professional international wildlife photographer David Plummer, selected 12 finalists from more than 680 entries for its online photography competition. Then it was over to the public, when over 800 people voted for their favourite.

It was a close contest, but a clear winner emerged – Michael Vickers of Pulborough with this beautiful shot called ‘Kingfisher Confrontation’.

Michael told us: “I took the photograph at Warnham Nature Reserve, near Horsham. I’d been a regular visitor, seeking to photograph this stunning bird. On this occasion, I was lucky to be in the right place at the right time, when one male kingfisher aggressively confronted another, who had been quietly watching the water.”

Richard French from St Leonards-on-Sea was voted runner-up with his unusual and beautiful ethereal fantasy landscape of British ancient woodland called ‘A Twist in Time’.

Michael has won £100, but he has kindly donated his winnings to support the work of Sussex Wildlife Trust. Richard has won a pair of reusable Keep Cups and Sussex Wildlife Trust’s 2021 printed calendar. 

All 12 finalists’ photographs will feature in Sussex Wildlife Trust’s 2021 online calendar, available to download in December this year. The photos will also feature on social media and the Trust’s members’ magazine. Michael has also been offered the chance to take-over the Trust's Instagram account for a week.
