Tell us a bit about yourself

    I was born in North Germany and came to the UK as an exchange student. I was studying English at the time and spent a year at Bristol University, which I loved. After finishing my teaching degree in Germany, I returned to the UK. I have lived here for 28 years, in London and Hastings.

    Did you know Rye Harbour Nature Reserve before coming to work here?

      Yes, I did. I moved to Hastings in 2015 and have been coming to Rye Harbour for walks and some birdwatching ever since. I love the landscape.

      How are you finding your new role?

        I am really enjoying the amazing surroundings, meeting many new people and learning a lot about Rye Harbour and the Sussex Wildlife Trust. It has been a very busy but very positive four weeks so far.

        What qualities are needed for this sort of position? 

          I have always greatly enjoyed working with people from all kinds of backgrounds. I've worked in heritage, culture and tourism for a long time and feel I have a good understanding of the opportunities and challenges the Discovery Centre faces. I am here to support my colleagues and the volunteers as much as I can on this exciting journey.

          How do you switch off when you’re not working?

            I love art and do a lot of photography in my spare time. I also sing in a local choir in St Leonard’s, which is a perfect way to socialise and relax.

            Dog or cat?

              In an ideal world, I’d have one of each. Sadly, I am away from home too many hours during the day to give a pet the attention it would need. Sometimes I do some cat sitting for a friend. Hopefully, one day I’ll have the time for a little furry friend of my own.

              Tee oder Kaffee?

                Definitely tea. Being German, I am usually expected to be a coffee person, But, I have always preferred a nice cuppa.

                Is there a place or view in Rye or the Rye area you love most and why?

                  I do love the view out of our fantastic café windows at the Discovery Centre. They frame the spectacular landscape perfectly. I am really looking forward to watching the bird activity here throughout the change of the seasons.
