Happy International Women's Day. We're proud of all the women - staff, trustees, volunteers and supporters - who speak up and stand up for wildlife every day.

We asked some of our female staff to share their achievements and what working for Sussex Wildlife Trust means to them.

It’s a huge honour to be CEO of the Sussex Wildlife Trust and represent our nearly 40,000 members in critical issues affecting nature in Sussex. I grew up in Sussex but lacking confidence, with no idea I had talent, little connection to nature and shy of any public speaking. I am some days still amazed at the role I’m in. I’m passionate about making real change and know from first-hand experience that it is possible.

My role involves marine conservation of all different kinds along the Sussex coastline and below the water – it’s a really varied role covering ecology, policy and engagement (and everything in between!) I’m really proud of everything that we get to do, we take on all kinds of work and our ability to mobilize when we want to get involved in work is great. Specifically though, it’s always a proud moment knowing our work has had meaningful and direct impact – such as our citizen science projects contributing to the designation and management of Marine Conservation Zones.

I joined the environmental sector late in my career, after spending most of my time in the City. And how my life has changed. It is a privilege to work for the Trust alongside such brilliant and inspiring people - all helping to make a difference to the wildlife and wild places in my home county of Sussex.

I run Sussex Wildlife Trust’s busy WildCall service, answering more than 1,600 wildlife-related questions each year and providing free advice on anything from species ID to what to do if there’s a snake under your fridge. No two days are the same and it’s a privilege to share and encourage people’s fascination and interest in the natural world - but also to empower people to take action for wildlife, whether it’s creating a garden pond, responding to a planning application or lobbying their MP. It’s amazing to hear what’s been achieved as a result, and to know I’m making a difference.
