Heathland Fire at Iping Common

On Wednesday morning (28 February 2018) a conservation team from Sussex Wildlife Trust were burning residues from recent scrub control at Iping Common nature reserve and their fire got out of control, driven by strengthening easterly winds.

The Fire Brigade were called and have now contained the spread of the fire affecting the western corner of the reserve, approximately 29 hectares. We would like to thank the Fire Service for their quick response to this incident.

Fire has long been used as a tool for heathland management, re-invigorating the habitat, but an extensive burn such as this one will be damaging in the short term, and will take some time for the site to recover.

The nature reserve will now be closed to the public until the fires have been completely extinguished.
