Heart-felt thanks

Thanks to two generous donations, vital life-saving equipment is now on board Sussex Wildlife Trust vehicles taking volunteers to remote nature reserves in the county.

The Sussex Heart Charity supplied a mobile Automated External Defibrillator (AED) and provided training in its use and The George Bairstow Charitable Trust (GBCT) gave a grant of over £650 to purchase a second AED.

Sussex Wildlife Trust has hundreds of volunteers and many of them carry out important nature conservation tasks on its reserves including helping with livestock, bridge building, fencing, scrub clearance and more. This conservation work ensures nature reserves are kept in tip-top condition for visitors as well as improving and maintaining habitat for wildlife.

David Saunders, Director of Land Management at the Sussex Wildlife Trust said, ‘By their very nature, many of our reserves are in remote locations which often have poor mobile phone reception and cannot be rapidly accessed by the emergency service should the need arise.

By taking AEDs with us on volunteer work parties, we are reducing the risk of death or serious disability as a result of sudden cardiac arrest in a remote location.’

A spokesman from the George Bairstow Charitable Trust said: ‘An AED is a key part of the chain of survival in the event of a cardiac arrest and every minute saved in accessing one counts, therefore, the GBCT are very pleased to support this initiative that will provide more AEDs in remote locations where other medical help may not be readily available.’
