Great news for Graffham Common

A generous £9,739 grant from Viridor Credits Environmental Company, via the Landfill Communities Fund, is helping to secure a sustainable future for the heathland restoration project at Sussex Wildlife Trust’s Graffham Common Nature Reserve.

The grant supports the cost of purchasing some British White cattle to graze the heath as well as contracts to control invasive rhododendron and bracken regrowth to maintain a varied and open habitat. There are already signs that three of the key endangered heathland birds; nightjars, woodlarks and tree pipits are establishing breeding territories on site and this work will help to make sure they stay for good.

Also central to the management of the nature reserve is the involvement of local volunteers and to this end we are having a “Mega-volunteer day” on Saturday 10 October 2015. Everyone is invited to come along and join in the fun!Have a go at cutting and pulling rhododendron, pine and birch saplings

As parking is limited, we are encouraging local people to walk to site or contact us for transport. We will do a pick-up in Midhurst around 10am, then Lodsworth and Graffham. We will drop back around 3pm.Booking is essential.The Arun and Rother Connections (ARC) project is helping with the day.

We will provide refreshments, tea, coffee and cakes and any tools and training needed. You just need to wear old clothes and bring your enthusiasm for working outdoors in a beautiful setting.
