The Trust’s new range of clothing has been a big hit since it was launched in our online store in the Summer, so I thought it would be interesting to find out more about Rapanui, the eco fashion people behind our clothes.

I was lucky enough to be invited on a tour of the Rapanui factory where the Sussex Wildlife Trust’s T-shirts, hoodies and other clothing are designed and produced. Rapanuni are based by the River Medina in Cowes, Isle of Wight, but don’t be fooled by their Victorian red brick factory, inside the company is young, hi-tech and highly connected.

Rob, the Co-Founder of Rapanui walked me through the journey that each order takes, from selecting the blank t-shirt to printing the digital design and finally onto dispatch, via numerous quality control checks. The whole process is digitally controlled via barcodes which can access the order and design details.

What impressed me most was the company’s commitment to clearly identifying the whole supply chain; the source of the raw materials, production processes and transportation used (yes, even camels). This traceability information is easily available on their website for each garment and allows customers to make their own informed choices. Rob also explained how their factory in India, where the blank T-shirts are produced, was a fair-trade operation, powered by the wind and all the products are made from 100% organic cotton. It is no coincidence that many of their clients are charities and good causes.
