Deneway's Wild Future launch

On a sunny Saturday in mid July, members of the Sussex Wildlife Trust Communities Directorate ran an event to launch Deneway’s Wild Future project at our urban reserve. Staff were ably supported by The Deneway's Youth Rangers group, who demonstrated their keen commitment to the scheme.

The aims of the project are to engage with the community in improving biodiversity on the site and provide a space for learning. This includes Forest School placements, Trainee Community Engagement Officers, engagement with schools, local groups and volunteering. Importantly, the project and site will be supported and led by our Youth Rangers.

On the launch day we welcomed the local community to explore the site. Staff led guided walks, wildflower planting, pond dipping, and Forest School activities, while others enjoyed spotting wildlife at their own pace. It was a sunny day, and nature was in full display—birds, pollinators, and invertebrates all playing their part.

Visitors loved getting a glimpse inside the usually locked reserve. Children left proudly wearing Forest School medallions, while we made sure no bugs went home in observation pots!

The event helped build connections with local groups, schools, preschools, and young people—some of whom joined the Youth Rangers. We hope it will be a springboard for raising the project's profile locally and advancing its goals.

Deneway’s Wild Future is made possible with The National Lottery Heritage Fund. Thanks to National Lottery players, we have been able to fund our community engagement and habitat improvement work at the urban nature reserve The Deneway in Brighton.
