David Streeter Award for outstanding contribution to nature conservation goes to Mya Bambrick

David Streeter MBE, retired ecologist and founder member of the Sussex Wildlife Trust, spent much of his career encouraging an interest in natural history amongst young people. When he stepped down as President, the Trust created an annual award in his name, to honour a young person making an outstanding contribution to nature conservation in Sussex.

At its virtual AGM on 14th November, Sussex Wildlife Trust President Dr Tony Whitbread presented this year’s award to young naturalist, birder and A level student Mya Bambrick from Crawley, in recognition of her excellent work as a blogger, vlogger and ambassador for multiple local wildlife organisations.

Mya attends Thomas Bennett Community College, which she describes as 'brilliant'.

In presenting the award, he said: ‘The committee was extremely impressed with the diversity of ways in which you are promoting people’s connection with wildlife, especially to young women. You are clearly an inspiration to many and we look forward to great things from you in future.’

David Streeter said: ‘I was disappointed that I was not able to present Mya with the award myself but offer many congratulations. Her involvement as an ambassador for wildlife for a number of organisations is hugely impressive and truly inspirational. Enthusiasm such as hers can give us confidence that the future of Sussex wildlife is assured.’

Mya won gift vouchers to the value of £250, which she will redeem with the Natural History Book Service. Mya says: 'It feels amazing to have won the David Streeter Award. I hope I can inspire other young people and show that if you are passionate about nature and conservation, you can go on to make a difference, despite any barriers that may be in the way.'
