Chance to win big prizes for 16-25 year olds in Sussex

Sussex Wildlife Trust is seeking nominations for the 2024 David Streeter Wildlife Champions Award for young people (aged 16-25 years old) who have taken meaningful action for wildlife and the environment in Sussex. The winner will receive £250 in cash or the equivalent value in a weekend Field Studies Council course, PLUS a free place on a Sussex Wildlife Trust course worth £47!

Who is David Streeter?

David Streeter MBE was a founder member of the Sussex Wildlife Trust when it was established in 1961 and was centrally involved as a Trustee in guiding its work, including serving as President from 2004 to 2017. As an academic ecologist at the University of Sussex, he spent much of his career encouraging an interest in natural history amongst young people.

What does ‘meaningful action for nature’ include?

Meaningful action for wildlife could be, but is not limited to:

  • Volunteering with a local wildlife charity.
  • Participating in community groups that improve the natural world e.g. a community wildlife garden, Youth Rangers.
  • Raising awareness of environmental issues e.g. through social media platforms.
  • Taking part in citizen science e.g. recording species through ID apps such as iRecord.
  • Studying natural history either through college/university, or independently.
  • Actively taking part in nature-based events with a local wildlife charity.

When are you accepting nominations?

Nominations will be open from the 1st – 30th September 2024. We will announce the winner in October and they will be invited to accept their award at the Sussex Wildlife Trust AGM in November.
