Can we spot 1000 species in 24 hours?

Sussex Wildlife Trust's Senior Ecologist, Graeme Lyons, and Trustee, Dave Green are going to try to see and identify 1000 species (or more!) in a 24 hour period starting midnight on 10 June 2017.

All of it will happen in West Sussex, along a route chosen for its rich wildlife. Most of the recording will take place on the Trust's nature reserves. The challenge aims to highlight the importance of wildlife recording and identification skills.

The rules for the challenge are:

  • It must be run from midnight to midnight
  • One vehicle and two people only
  • You can't split up so both people have to see each species
  • Traps can be set up before midnight but cannot be activated until then
  • All microscope work and identification must occur in the 24 hour period otherwise it does not count
  • All records must be submitted to the local record's centre afterwards
