It is vitally important that in this General Election the environment doesn’t get forgotten again.

In the 2015 general election the environment really didn’t feature. If we want Sussex to be a place for nature’s recovery, where people and wildlife thrive together, it has to be different this time. The first step is to make sure that the environment features in political parties’ manifestos.

This snap election is a chance for your vote to count towards a flourishing environment. Insist that our wildlife on land and at sea is given a chance to thrive. Demand clean air and water, a sustainable economy and a country where people are connected to nature.

Election manifestos are being finalised this weekend and your MP can affect what goes in them.

If you care about the future of our natural environment, please write to your MP today to demand that nature is on the agenda.

For the wellbeing of their constituents and Sussex wildlife, we want MP’s to ask their party leaders to commit in their General Election manifestos to:

  • Fully transpose and maintain all of the current EU environmental laws and principles in UK or devolved nation law; and ensure that these standards will improve over time and will be enforced properly - not watered down, abandoned or reversed.
  • Introduce new laws and policies which make the UK a world leader in high environmental standards, creating sustainable farming and fishing industries that allow nature to thrive and improve over time. These must deliver real benefits, where public money delivers public goods including abundant nature, sustainable food production, clean water, climate change mitigation and beautiful landscapes.
  • Ensure that the UK leads on climate change by publishing robust low carbon investment plans and producing a UK climate strategy to play our part in delivering the Paris Climate Agreement.

    I am disgusted at both the tone of your flyer from Dr Tony Whitbread and the use of the term “Greener UK” which smacks as a reference to the Green Party. As your organisation has seen fit to bring party politics into your ambit at this crucial time where much more important political issues than wildlife need to be addressed by those with a greater grasp of what is required to lead this country into the unchartered waters that we now face I shall now be very seriously looking at cancelling both my support and future donations to you.

    Sussex Wildlife Trust does not support any political party and would never tell anyone who to vote for. We work impartially to promote understanding of the value and importance of our natural environment.

    We do support Greener UK, a coalition of 13 major environmental organisations which was formed after the EU referendum. Greener UK is working impartially to restore and enhance the UK’s environment and is not affiliated to any political party.

    I cannot agree with Paul Craven in his comments above. What can be more important than our environment. We all cease to exist if the balance of nature is too damaged. We are certainly heading in the wrong direction at the moment. When voting this issue is of considerable importance.
