Tell us a bit about yourself

My name is Thiago, I'm 29 years old and was born in Brazil, but I also have a Portuguese passport. I came to England three years ago. I live in Haywards Heath and work as a team leader for a ground operations company at Gatwick Airport. 

I care about wildlife because animals have no voice, they deserve to be seen and someone needs to speak for them. Through photography, I want to show the world the beauty of nature, wildlife and our planet.

Which photographers inspire you?

Gaspard-Félix Tournachon (Nadar) was a photographer in the 19th century and a pioneer. The aerial photos we see taken by drones - he took similar ones but from an air balloon. I really admire his creativity. Sebastião Salgado is one of the best social documentary photographer and photojournalists, Lucas Pinhel for his creativity when he takes his photos and in post-production, his essence is in the photos. And Gregory Piper, who is a photographer who contributes directly to National Geographic and has a passion for photographing wildlife.

When and why did you develop an interest in photography?

I started to like photography when I took some road trips with my parents when I was a child. My dad had an old camera and I liked to play with it. Years later my parents bought a camera for me to start my first steps and I am very grateful for that, today I can't live without my camera by my side.

What equipment do you use, in brief?

Canon Mirrorless R; Canon RF 24-105mm F4-7.1 IS STM, Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 STM and Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS STM; NEEWER Premium LED Bulbs, Speedlite 600EX II-RT.

What's your favourite wildlife shot?

My favourite photo wildlife photo was when I was traveling in the Atacama desert in Chile in June 2017 and we saw a group of flamingos flying above a reddish lagoon, so beautiful.

Have you ever had any surprises when you’ve been out with a camera?

I visited Petworth Park a few months ago to walk and photograph when I came across a big group of deer. And I had never seen that, because where I lived in Brazil, there are no deer. That was all very beautiful.

Any tips?

Follow your dreams. I should have done this from the start, before I even graduated in accounting. Photography is and has always been my passion.
