Behind the Lens with Mya Bambrick

Sixteen year old Mya lives in Crawley. She's a regular at Sussex Wildlife Trust reserves, and used to be a Wildlife Watch member. We spoke to her about her wildlife photography.

Tell us a bit about yourself.

I've been a birder for eight years. I'm on the Sussex Ornithological Society Council. I've been a trainee bird ringer for three years at Cissbury Ring, and I've been writing a blog for the last five years, which has had 20,000 views.

What are you trying to communicate with your photographs?

To show how amazing wildlife is, which is why we need to do as much as we can to conserve it.

Who are your heroes?

I admire (Swedish climate activist) Greta Thunberg. She's an inspiration, getting that message out and standing up to so many politicians. Chris Packham is great too, trying to get so many important environmental and animal welfare issues sorted.

What qualities do you need to be a good wildlife photographer?

Patience, imagination, respect for wildlife, not disturbing it by going too close. Look for different and interesting angles, and be aware of the changing light conditions throughout the day. 

What are your plans beyond GCSEs?

I'm planning to take A levels in biology, chemistry and geography, then I'd like to study Zoology or Wildlife Conservation, in order to be an ornithologist, and perhaps a part time freelance photographer. I want to inspire other young people to get out into wildlife and nature and understand the importance of what's happening with climate change and the lack of biodiversity.

What equipment do you use?

Canon 400mm f5.6

What’s your favourite shot?

The Robin in the snow. It was unexpected. The snow and the Robin!

What do you find most challenging to photograph and why?

A Jay, because they are secretive, and Kingfishers because they don't hang around.

What does being in nature mean to you?

It is so good for mental health and for clearing the head - so it's been really helpful during my revision!
