Arundel A27 Bypass Consultation

Today, National Highways have launched a public consultation on their proposals for a huge 8km dual carriageway south of Arundel. They announced their preferred route back in 2020 and now are asking for public views on their more detailed proposals.

As a member of the South Coast Alliance for Transport and Environment (SCATE), the Sussex Wildlife Trust has been campaigning against this road proposal for many, many years. We agree that there are congestion issues around Arundel, but spending hundreds of millions of pounds in a nature-destroying, traffic-inducing, carbon-producing scheme to save 9.3 minutes of travel time is not the solution. Instead we have always favoured a smaller intervention between the Ford Road roundabout and Crossbush Junction, along with far more investment into integrated sustainable travel options.

As the consultation has only launched today, we need some time to look at the detailed documents, especially the Biodiversity and Climate chapters of National Highway’s Preliminary Environmental Information Report.

As soon as we have considered the evidence, we will let our members know about our biggest concerns and provide more information on how to respond.

    The proposal just moves the area of congestion from one place to another. We should not be building new roads. Money should be spent on improving old ones and providing sustainable transport.

    With the changed reality of more people working from home and not commuting as much I personally feel these highly questionable civic projects and government expense will be wasted. We insult peoples intelligence to make alternative travel arrangements where possible should they not be happy with congestion. And more disruption to precious nature areas is not welcome.
