1000 Species Challenge

Recording one thousand Sussex wildlife species in 24 hours – that’s the challenge facing Sussex Wildlife Trust senior ecologist Graeme Lyons and Trustee of the charity Dave Green this Saturday (10 June 2017).

They will start their epic search at one second past midnight on Saturday, June 10th at Sussex Wildlife Trust’s Ebernoe Common nature reserve near Petworth. After recording as many species as possible at this site, they will visit other West Sussex natures reserves such as Levin Down, Iping Common, Burton Pond and Amberley Wildbrooks to increase their tally. Species recorded will include birds, beetles, small and large mammals, mosses, plants, amphibians, dragonflies and fungi.

This challenge is all about promoting the importance of recording wildlife found in our county as well as raising money for Sussex Wildlife Trust, the largest nature conservation organisation in the county.

Graeme said, ‘We decided to do this challenge to raise awareness about the importance of officially recording the wildlife people see in their gardens, towns and also in the wider countryside. These records are invaluable in providing a picture of wildlife rich areas and also those areas where species are struggling to survive. This information can be used to help manage our nature reserves as well as to advise planning applications and inform important research.’
