100 Miles for Nature Restoration

Dr Poppy Lakeman Fraser is running 100 miles across the South Downs Way to fundraise for the Trust's Species Restoration Fund

We asked her to tell us more about herself and the challenge she's embarking on

I work at Imperial College London, where I design citizen science surveys and lecture on public engagement. I volunteer on various projects such as Seeds4Kids, Plastic Free Eastbourne and environmental education initiatives at my daughter’s school, all supporting local communities to take action for nature.

Like many of us, I have positive early memories of spending time outdoors. The first word I spelled was ‘butterfly,’ and I used to watch my dad on his editing machine, cutting Wildlife Documentary films. These experiences sparked my lifelong fascination with wildlife and conservation. 

Running has been a significant part of my life since I was a teenager. I find that it helps me to disconnect from the stresses of life and explore the beauty and complexity of local ecosystems.

Combining these passions, I’m embarking on a challenge to run 100 miles along parts of the South Downs Way to raise funds for the Sussex Wildlife Trust’s Species Restoration Fund. This initiative is close to my heart as it aims to restore and protect vital habitats in Sussex, ensuring that wildlife can thrive for generations to come.

Sussex is incredible. The natural beauty and varied habitats here—from the downs and heathlands to the forests, levels, and coast—are astounding. I want to share this pride and raise awareness about the natural treasures we have right on our doorstep, treasures that many people might not even know exist.

By sharing pictures and stories from my runs, I hope to highlight the incredible wildlife that lives near to our homes and the importance of preserving these natural habitats.

I’ve set a fundraising goal of £500 on my JustGiving page, which will go directly to the Trust’s efforts in protecting and restoring local habitats. 

I have also designed a new jumper all about Sussex wildlife with all profits going to the Trust. 

Additionally, this fundraising effort is a personal challenge for my 40th birthday. Combining my love for nature and running, I aim to make a meaningful impact while celebrating this milestone in a way that reflects my passions and values.
